NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — The annual tuition for full-day kindergarten in Northborough will increase next year to $3000 as part of the proposed FY2013 budget.

Currently, it costs $2750 to send a child to full-day kindergarten for one year.

"It puts us in line with what neighboring communities charge," Superintendent Charles Gobron said of the change.

In comparison, the Berlin-Boylston school district also charges $3000 for full-day kindergarten. The Marlborough school district charges $2700. The Shrewsbury school district charges $2800—though this may change once the budget process for next year has finished.

Gobron also pointed out that Northborough charges much less than the surrounding private kindergartens. Indeed, private full-day sessions can cost twice as much as their public counterparts.

School districts are not, by law, required to provide full-day kindergarten—only half-day kindergarten, which is free. Gobron said that Northborough has offered full-day kindergarten since the 2000-2001 school year. Back then, tuition was $2000.
